Whitney Port is Engaged!

Whitney Port, designer of fashion label 'Whitney Eve' and star of reality TV shows 'The Hills' and 'The City' is engaged to Tim Rosenman. The couple met during filming of 'The City', where Tim was the producer.

 

 

Whitney told Ok! Magazine that her engagement ring features a 3.00ct diamond with a rose gold band. There are not yet any good images of the ring, as the proposal was so recent, but the diamond looks to be a 4 claw set round brilliant diamond, with diamond shoulders; stunning! Stress Free Jewellery

So, today is National Stress Awareness Day. Buying fine jewellery can be a stressful experience, as it is a high value purchase and you want it to be just right. Diamond jewellery is often the trickiest to choose, as there are many factors to consider.

 

To take the stress out of choosing your diamond jewellery, it's important to know what characteristics to look for in a diamond. When buying a diamond you must decide which factors are the most important to you, such as the size of the stone, the colour or the clarity, as buying the perfect diamond for your budget hinges on deciding which factors can be compromised.

 

Cut

 

The 'cut' of a diamond refers to its' shape The most popular cuts are Round Brilliant, Emerald, Princess and Cushion cut.

The cut also refers to the way the facets have been cut, which affects the diamonds' reflective qualities. 'Brilliant' diamonds have 5 different grades of cut quality, so this is something to be aware of if you are looking for a round brilliant diamond.

 

Clarity

The clarity of a diamond refers to any inclusions that might be present within the stone. The most desirable diamond has no inclusion at all; flawless.

 

F
Flawless: No internal or external flaws. Extremely rare.  

 

IF
Internally Flawless: no internal flaws, but some surface flaws. Very rare.    

 

VVS1-VVS2
Very Very Slightly Included (two grades). Minute inclusions very difficult to detect under 10x magnification by a trained gemmologist.    

 

VS1-VS2
Very Slightly Included (two grades). Minute inclusions seen only with difficulty under 10x magnification.

 

SI1-SI2
Slightly Included (two grades). Minute inclusions more easily detected under 10x magnification.

 

 

 

The clarity greatly affects the price of a diamond. Flawless diamonds are highly desirable, but command a premium. With diamonds from F to SI1 you can not see the inclusions with the naked eye, so this can be a factor that you compromise on, as clarities VVS, VS and SI1 have inclusions that can only be seen through a jewellers loupe (10x magnification).

 

 

Colour

Colour is perhaps the most important factor to consider when buying a diamond, as it is what you will first notice when you look at your jewellery.

 

 

 

A diamond is most desirable when it is colourless. Diamonds from graded from D to I will appear colourless to the naked eye, and will appear to start drawing colour from grade K.

 

Carat Weight

The carat weight of a diamond alters the size of the diamond, so greatly affects the price.

If the size of your diamond is important to you, you might want to consider compromising on the colour or clarity to accommodate this into your budget. If you would rather have a very high quality diamond then carat weight is probable the factor that you should compromise on.

October Birthstones- Opal & Tourmaline

Are you looking for a gift for a loved one with a birthday in October? Birthstone jewellery makes an ideal present, as not only are the gemstones beautiful, they are embedded with significance.

Opal

Opals are famous for their play of colours when moved. This shimmering effect and flash of colour is caused by the interference of light on small cracks and other internal structural differences. The different colours are caused by various chemical inclusions; yellows and reds betray the presence of iron oxides. The spectacular black opals that sometimes flash green, blue and red get their color from magnesium oxides and organic carbon within the stone. Opals can also be milky in appearance, caused by the inclusions of tiny gas bubbles. Opals are formed in near-surface volcanic rocks, within cavities and cracks.

 The main source of opals is Australia, where black opals are found. Fire opals were first mined in Mexico, and continue to be produced today. In the United States, brilliant fire opals are also found in Nevada. Other commercial sources of opal are Brazil, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Japan and Ireland.

The name opal is derived from the Sanskrit word “upala,” as well as the Latin “opalus,” meaning “precious stone.”

The Opal has a rich history. In Roman times, the opal was perceived as a symbol of love and hope. Orientals called it the “anchor of hope.” Arabs say it fell from the heavens in flashes of lightning. The ancient Roman natural historian Pliny once described it in the following way.

“… it is made up of the glories of the most precious stones. To describe it is a matter of inexpressive difficulty: There is in it the gentler fire of the ruby, the brilliant purple of the amethyst, the sea-green of the emerald, all shining together in an incredible union.”

In Elizabethan England the opal was treasured for its beauty. Shakespeare wrote of it in the Twelfth Night as the “queen of gems.” Queen Victoria presented her children with opal jewellery, thus making the stone popular.

 

The opal is a beautiful stone, each one is unique.

 

 

 

 

Tourmaline

The name of this gemstone is thought to come from the Sri Lankan word “toramalli,” a term applied to yellow, green or brown stones, that means “something little out of the earth.”

 Tourmaline is a complex aluminous borosilicate mineral built of crystals.

Other metals are present within the crystal structure, and are responsible for the characteristic colors of the gemstones.

 A valued variety of tourmaline that has 2 colours is called ‘watermelon’ tourmaline. This particular type is found in Brazil. The outer edges of the gem are green, transitioning to a transparent white zone that gives way to a pink or light red interior.

Tourmaline is known as the ‘peace stone’, believed to dispel fear and make its wearer calm.
